What Is Happening Can Be Understood

We are struggling through the consequences of the elite’s failed rule. As central and eastern Europe were transformed by the fall of the great monarchies, the USA is beginning a transition of historic moment.

The USA’s distress is caused by the death throes of a ruling class that may be historically unique. Unsurprisingly — for the dying often rally briefly — there is a frantic attempt to reassert power as the end approaches.

Courage, everyone. This will take time.

Proof Positive, As If It Were Needed, That The Major US News Media Practice Censorship In Pursuit Of Partisan Goals

Honduras. Backing Obama, the media refuse to report the truth.

Their excuses will doubtless be attempts at distraction. Obama’s supporters will buy them, but now everyone can see what is going on. It’s brazen, it’s elitist, it’s utterly inexcusable, and it reveals the media — yet again — as inveterate leftist propagandists.

As time passes, pressure will mount on the unprincipled journalists, and they will have to allow the public to learn some aspects of the truth regarding Honduras. It will be partial, it will be downplayed, it will soft-pedal the connections to Castro and Chavez, and news consumers in general will know roughly as much about Honduras and Zelaya as they know about Saddam’s (very real) weapons of mass destruction.

The journalists know they do not have to prevent all of the truth from getting out. They know that if you spike most of it before it reaches the public, and mock and ridicule what is reported, you have done your job.

This Is A Complex And Sly Way Of Restricting The Public’s Options

Obama is making a mistake: he’s pushing hard for a quick and total victory on health care. He may not achieve it. If he does not, a long, slow battle will be even more likely to fail. He should have started off carefully, emphasizing the great care with which his plans are being drawn up, and gradually introducing “reforms” designed to prove that he can make the US version of socialized medicine work.

The actual strategy is misguided because it calls for sweeping change at a bad time. The nation is unsettled, unsure, troubled. It should be given time to recover before it is asked to undertake such massive change.

That is not to imply that a slower move toward health care reform would succeed. The administration should prove, before the major overhaul starts, that it can reform health care. That means it should make the disgraceful Veterans’ Administration work, and deliver quality health care to Native Americans. These two federal programs are both badly broken. Though the failures have been inherited from the G. W. Bush administration, it is still true that if the (thick-headed, sluggish) GOP ever publicizes the shambles that government care already is, Obamacare will be in deep trouble.

It makes sense to the White House, therefore, to try for a quick kill. That means choking off the options the public has, preventing competition from free enterprise. Make private insurance illegal, in other words.

The best way to do that is to avoid any whiff of criminalization, and crush private health insurance with new regulations.

…the House bill does not outright outlaw private individual health insurance, but it does effectively regulate it out of existence. The House bill does allow private insurance to be sold, but only “Exchange-participating health benefits plans.” In order to qualify as an “Exchange-participating health benefits plan,” all health insurance plans must conform to a slew of new regulations, including community rating and guaranteed issue. These will all send the cost of private individual health insurance skyrocketing. Furthermore, all these new regulations would not apply just to individual insurance plans, but to all insurance plans. So the House bill will also drive up the cost of your existing employer coverage as well. Until, of course, it becomes so expensive that your company makes the perfectly economical decision to dump you into the government plan.

This is a stealthy, cynical, and deceitful tactic. It will probably work.

So it’s all up to Congress now. If that makes you feel comfortable, then this newsletter suggests you look at the financial state of the nation and ask yourself how you managed to lose your common sense.

The Anthropogenic Global Warming Cult Provides More Typical Proof Of Its Claims

This is choice: AGW is reducing the size of fish.

That’s astounding, given two facts: first, the earth is cooling, not warming, and has been doing that for about a decade. There’s no cause there!

Second, the AGW faithful are guilty of a fundamental error in logic.

Assume for a madcap moment that global warming is a fact. If fish are indeed shrinking in size, then how do we know that warming is causing the phenomenon? Even if we knew that under laboratory conditions fish do decrease in size as the temperature of the water rises, that fact would not necessarily apply to fish in the wild. Any number of unknown factors may reduce the size of animals in Nature.

Recall, for example, that wild animals on islands can evolve to smaller versions of the creatures that originally populated the islands. Exactly why and how that happens is unknown. And — it does not always happen. Insular dwarfism has been a puzzle for a long time, and the puzzle is complicated by its exact opposite, insular gigantism. The reasons for the sizes of animals, including fish, are not easy to discover. Any quick and plausible explanation is probably another Just-so story, and highly unlikely to be correct.

Finding causes for effects is difficult enough, without the intrusion of irrational thinking. Consider this:

Mrs. Smith’s mother arrived at the Smith residence to spend a month with her daughter and son-in-law. Mr. Smith left the next morning for Tahiti.

So Mr. Smith, noting the arrival of the battleaxe, fled to an exotic clime? Not at all. In fact his business trip to Tahiti was scheduled long before his mother-in-law, whom he loves dearly, announced her impending arrival. He’ll be back in four days.

The false cause-effect connection is a logical fallacy known as post hoc ergo propter hoc, which means, after this, therefore because of it. The juxtaposition of two phenomena does not indicate cause – effect.

So even if global warming were present, we would still have more questions than answers regarding the sizes of fish.

The True Believers, casting about frantically, are ascribing all things odd or bad to AGW. That’s all there is here.

Meanwhile, in the huge pork barrel that is tax money wasted on AGW, it’s billions for junk science. No wonder there are so many True Believers: there’s no money in debunking the myths!

Related: a Senate committee, assuming that “climate change” means “global warming” and that “global warming” means “cataclysmic catastrophe,” investigates the military implications of what might happen, maybe, if we don’t do something, or even if we do. It’s all predicated on the existence of global warming, but, as stated above, the earth is really cooling.

Very good, Senators. Now take your medication, and don’t be late for group.

Israel And Obama

What is the basis for Obama’s Israel policy? According to one interpretation, it begins with the president’s belief “…that former U.S. President George W. Bush achieved nothing by working with Israel….” so it’s time to get tough with the Israelis.

You would think the experience of the Bush years would have led the Obama team to an opposite conclusion: If settlements had been the obstacle to peace, why did Sharon’s removal of 8,000 settlers from 21 settlements lead to the rise of Hamas, thousands of Qassam rockets fired at Israel, and war instead of peace?

A bad beginning is followed by worse developments; signal among them is the distinct hardening of the “Palestinian” position. Well, the rascals had listened to what Barry said, and figured him out in a trice.

It gets worse. The maladroit and unprincipled nature of the US administration’s demands on Israel is symbolized by a portion of Jerusalem where neither Jews nor Arabs are forbidden to live — a neighborhood that Obama wants created “Judenrein” (“Jew-clean,” meaning utterly free of all Jews). The very idea is stunningly insensitive.

Read the entire article, and see why this newsletter believes that Obama comes to the problems of the Middle East as anything but a helpful, unbiased party. This is not a man whose errors are the result of naivete. His prejudices are easily discernable.

What in the world has gotten into AP these days? This is the outfit that the PenPo’s predecessor, The Terrapin Gazette, held up as probably the most dishonest, deceitful and biased of all the media. Now this. Stunning! Keep it up, AP, and this newsletter will happily proclaim that you are not running with Obama’s pack of lap dogs.

The Obamaniacs are excruciatingly sensitive to criticism, often labeling it racism or even the advocacy of slavery. Even when allowing others to have a say, many “progressives” do not tolerate free speech at all gracefully. An example is available. And there, Pilgrims, goes the myth of liberal liberalism…. Why do they hate Liberty, you ask? Because they are collectivists, and must control individuals in order to maintain solidarity. It’s group-think — as in science by consensus (AGW), and the power needed to sustain it.

“Speak truth to power.” Baloney. And look who’s peddling it.

Obama made this part of a recent meeting with the press, so here is the police report of the incident that has the president upset. All lies? Maybe, maybe not, but one thing we do know, and it’s the only aspect of the tale that matters: Obama has friends, and they are Special People. If that doesn’t raise your eyebrows, ask yourself whether you can recall ever learning that a sitting president made remarks like Obama’s about an incident like this. FDR had less to say about Auschwitz. (Hat tip to JY for this.) — And that, Pilgrims, is all the links to the Gates arrest this newsletter will include, because of the people babbling about it, not one in a thousand understands what makes it significant.

The PenPo eagerly awaits Obama’s apologetic, concession-making overture to North Korea. Hope and change!

After you read this essay on whether it is better to be right or to win, please recall that one of the most unprincipled webloggers in creation, Markos Moulitsas, urged his readers to lie about the causes of the defeat of Kerry. You know what to expect: put a hard-core liberal in the White House, and he’ll want to legalize all sorts of sin — everything from homosexuality in the armed forces to opium dens in Manhattan. So when Obama took over, we could expect the left wing of the Democratic party would break out the soon-to-be-legal marijuana, right? Wrong. Obama is not a true liberal, he’s a collectivist. Collectivists do not believe in the definition of Liberty that individualists do. So we have this. That’s right: there is no more herd-minded ideologue than somebody who believes in the supremacy of the collective and the threat individual choice poses to solidarity. Obama is a variety of fascist.

From The Archive

It was in The Terrapin Gazette of October 30, 2005:

Sometimes Readers Of The Big Papers Forget This Vital Fact

Here’s columnist Michelle Malkin on a major N Y newspaper:

As for the Times, what do I always say? It’s always more informative for what it leaves out than for what it puts in.

Her words repeat our oft-asserted contention: propaganda is not simply fake news crafted to make you stop thinking for yourself. Propaganda is censorship is the omission of information.

What was Michelle referring to? Go here for the full story. The fundamentals are tragic, and what the NYTimes did to those basic facts is therefore particularly depressing. But it was predictable. Once again, the Times’s ideological bias trumps the simple truth.

Regarding The Segment Directly Above, Here’s A Little Quiz For You

Who said this?

Earlier this month, the world learned of a letter written by al Qaeda’s number two leader, a man named Zawahiri, a letter he wrote to his chief deputy in Iraq, the terrorist Zarqawi. In it, Zawahiri points to Vietnam as a model for al Qaeda. He writes: “The aftermath of the collapse of American power in Vietnam, and how they ran and left their agents, is noteworthy.” The terrorists witnessed a similar response after the attacks of American troops in Beirut in 1983, Mogadishu in 1993. They believe that America can be made to run again — only this time, on a larger scale, with greater consequences.

Secondly, the militant network wants to use the vacuum created by an American retreat to gain control of a country, a base from which to launch attacks and conduct their war against non-radical Muslim governments. Over the past few decades, radicals have specifically targeted Egypt and Saudi Arabia and Pakistan and Jordan for potential takeover. They’ve achieved their goal, for a time, in Afghanistan. And now they’ve set their sights on Iraq. In his recent letter, Zawahiri writes that al Qaeda views Iraq as, “the place for the greatest battle.” The terrorists regard Iraq as the central front in their war against humanity. And we must recognize Iraq as the central front in our war on terror.

Third, the militants believe that controlling one country will rally the Muslim masses, enabling them to overthrow all moderate governments in the region, and establish a radical Islamic empire that spans from Spain to Indonesia. Zawahiri writes that the terrorists, “must not have their mission end with the expulsion of Americans from Iraq.” He goes on to say, “The jihad requires several incremental goals — expel the Americans from Iraq; establish the Islamic authority over as much territory as you can to spread its power in Iraq; extend the jihad wave to the secular countries neighboring Iraq.”

With the greater economic and military and political power they seek, the terrorists would be able to advance their stated agenda: to develop weapons of mass destruction; to destroy Israel; to intimidate Europe; to assault the American people; and to blackmail our government into isolation.

So, did you identify the speaker? More to the point, did you see this quote in any newspaper? Do you think that those who wish to judge the opinions of the speaker regarding US foreign policy should read it? Could any such judgment be complete or even partially informed, in the absence of this quote?

Just asking….

See the source of the above quote here.

The PenPo Still Cherishes This Quote

This masterpiece was quoted in The Terrapin Gazette of April 3, 2003.

If she had lived, Mary Jo Kopechne would be sixty-two years old. Through his tireless work as a legislator, Edward Kennedy would have brought comfort to her in her old age.

That is the work of one Charles Pierce, writing (if you can call it that) in the Boston Globe Magazine on January 5, 2003.

Boston, eh?

Oh, well…..
