Number 190

The New Terrapin Gazette Number 190                                                                                                                                     27 February, 2011   Every revolution evaporates and leaves behind only the slime of a new bureaucracy.   The Koch Brothers “Progressives” loathe the Koch brothers (it’s a long story; for the latest tip of the iceberg, first turn off AdBlockPlus if you are using it on Firefox, and then see this weblog post). In fact it turns out that just about everyone hates the Brothers Koch, for if you dig a little, you will find these two very rich guys have funded somebody you fear. Yep, Dave and Chuck are always giving money to the wrong people. The result: a video hit piece from the Russians, and the skulduggery of the brothers is exposed in a damning revelation, and so on and on…you can find all sorts of rabid rants about the Kochs on the internet. It appears these two Machiavellian wizards belong in the innermost circle of hell. While a lot of the brothers’ activities inspire conspiracist fantasies, a sober and all-inclusive report on where they put their money might surprise those of you who want to eat the rich. It has to do with the PATRIOT Act. Now The New Terrapin pleads guilty to having ignored this legislation, in spite of the fact that the law’s name has become a cussword. Some folks insist that PATRIOT totally abolished the...

Number 189

The New Terrapin Gazette Number 189                                                                                                                                 22 February, 2011   Against stupidity the very gods themselves contend in vain.   Team Obama On The Cyber-Attack The mainstream media are whining that the White House has done an end run around them, thus evading the government’s accountability to the press. That is implied to be a hindrance to good governance. On the one hand, this looks like a plausible refutation of the viewpoint that the major media have been and still are “in the tank” for Obama. On the other, it exhibits the administration’s desire to be the news media, to control the news directly and virtually totally. In truth, the Obamites have the attitude of every Peronist regime: the Party cannot ever have complete enough control of information. The concept is silly, for, as this publication has insisted many times, censorship need not be total in order to be devastatingly effective, and that’s especially true of a government that rules as the choice of a simple majority of the electorate. Obama remains the overwhelming favorite of the news media. So what’s going on? A mild paranoia has set in, and doubtless the Tea Party Movement is part of the cause. Obama never dreamed that the voters would hammer their representatives as hard as they have, angrily shouting them down when the hapless Solons tried to lecture their constituents....

Number 188

The New Terrapin Gazette Number 188                                                                                                                          12 February, 2011   Once the state has been founded, there can no longer be any heroes. They come on the scene only in uncivilized conditions.   A tip of the hat to loyal reader JY for a link to this commentary. Do read the post, for it explains why democracy is not the answer to the world’s problems. Values, the moral insights that determine character, are the defining core of a person’s being. Islam rots that core, fostering fear and hatred of Liberty. This is why Number 187 of The New Terrapin greeted the revolution in Egypt with pessimism; recall also the quote that opened Number 179: “…were democracy to suddenly come to these (Muslim dictatorships), it would be little more than a gangplank to theocracy. …we cannot merely force Muslim dictators from power and open the polls. It would be like opening the polls to the Christians of the fourteenth century.” Democracy in Afghanistan? Not a good idea. While this commentary is eminently reasonable — sample: “As anyone with eyes to see must know by now, those who say they are the British establishment’s sworn enemies are no better than the ruling elite” — it would be premature to announce the demise of the multiculturalist mindset. Britain is still floundering. Yes, it may reach solid ground shortly and lead the...

Number 187

The New Terrapin Gazette Number 187                                                                                                                                 5 February, 2011   The Few assume to be the deputies, but they are often only the despoilers of the Many.   Charlatans Preside Over The Decline Of The West As this is written, it appears that Egypt will fall to Israel’s blood enemies. That makes it especially upsetting that the USA is in the hands of utter incompetents. Consider the fundamentals, as presented in this devastating commentary: …Western countries’ poor handling of the Middle East proves they are no longer leaders. Right before our eyes the superpowers are turning into palaver powers. There are no excuses for the contradictions. How can it be that Bush’s America understood the problem of repression in the Arab world, but Obama’s America ignored it until last week? How can it be that in May 2009, Hosni Mubarak was an esteemed president whom Barack Obama respected, and in January 2011, Mubarak is a dictator whom even Obama is casting aside? How can it be that in June 2009, Obama didn’t support the masses who came out against the zealot Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, while now he stands by the masses who are coming out against the moderate Mubarak? There is one answer: The West’s position is not a moral one that reflects a real commitment to human rights. The West’s position reflects the adoption of Jimmy Carter’s worldview:...

Number 186

The New Terrapin Gazette Number 186                                                                                                                                         2 February, 2011   Free people can treat each other justly, but they can’t make life fair. To get rid of the unfairness among individuals, you have to exercise power over them. The more fairness you want, the more power you need. Thus, all dreams of fairness become dreams of tyranny in the end.   The Assault On The First Amendment From a “wingnut” website that, while not always rational, certainly understands this issue: The Left’s attempt to link the Tucson shootings to angry rhetoric (not theirs, of course) was stage one of a broader strategy–what both military men and political strategists refer to as preparing the battlefield. The movement to feign nonpartisanship at the State of the Union address by seating Republicans and Democrats together is another aspect of this stage. At the same time, the Left is moving on to stage two–an effort to cash in on battlefield preparation by attacking specific figures on the right and trying to shut down speech that the Left finds inconvenient. (Emphasis added.) You really should read it all, but consider at least this much: The New Terrapin has hammered endlessly on the importance of censorship. The “progressive” collectivists are yet again attempting a variety of censorship, this time furthered by claims that some people are not qualified to have opinions. (You know the...
