Number 291

The New Terrapin Gazette Number 291 28 January, 2013 Going around the poor parts of the world shoving birth-control pills down people’s throats, hustling them into abortion clinics, and giving them cheap prizes for getting sterilized is to assume that those people don’t want babies as much as we do, that they won’t like those babies as well as we like ours, and that little brown and yellow babies are not as good as the adorable pink, rich kind. The Future Of The Republican Party Of The USA The appearance of Hillary before the US Senate foreign relations committee was a revelation. No, it told the electorate nothing new about Hillary; instead it exposed the GOP as a mush-brained unworthy opponent for Barack Obama. It was a disgrace. Instead of nailing the secretary of state to the far wall, the Republicans incompetently let her escape unscathed. Their questions were not sharply focused, and they lacked potency. Most disturbing of all, the questions were not coordinated. The senators did not play as a team; there was obviously no game plan, so there were neither adroit handoffs nor gang tackles. That was probably because the senators’ bloated egos have never let them be a team. McCain bloviated aimlessly, and the core questions all citizens should demand be answered were shrugged off as trivial. Hillary kicked the Republicans’ butts. That seems to...

Number 290

The New Terrapin Gazette Number 290 22 January, 2013 Amid the fog of denial, remorse, and confusion over the Kennedy assassination, an informal strategic response developed that would serve the purposes of the burgeoning New Left as well as assuage the consciences of liberals generally: transform Kennedy into an all-purpose martyr for causes he didn’t take up and for a politics he didn’t subscribe to…. Book Review Aping Mankind; Neuromania, Darwinitis and the Misrepresentation of Humanity by Raymond Tallis. Acumen, 2012. ISBN 978-1-84465-273-0. Overview The author is a British physician who retired from practice to write on a variety of topics. In this challenging yet graceful volume, he mounts a brilliant attack on practitioners of “scientism”, beginning with mechanist-reductionist “neuromaniacs” in thrall to the charms of overweening neurological technology, and then moving on to the “Darwinitics”, believers in “Darwinitis”, an overzealous, distorted extension of Darwin’s seminal insights. It is a rout. You might have heard that some amazing devices have allowed scientists to pinpoint the anatomical locations of love, hate, aggression and even awareness itself in the heads of living humans. When functional magnetic resonance imaging (which the Brits abbreviate as fMRI) is employed, increases and decreases in the electromagnetic activity of various areas of the brain can be detected. The hubristic, unwarranted conclusion transgresses science: the observed activity in the brain is the thought, emotion, or intent under...

Number 289

The New Terrapin Gazette Number 289 17 January, 2013 …if mere disproof were enough to rid us of ideas, think of the things we’d be free from: the social sciences, group therapy, raising taxes to decrease government spending. Two Ways To Gain Credibility And Political Influence The first way: if you are a provider of news and commentary, begin by telling lies and selectively underplaying important stories. Then set up a “fact check” outfit that is claimed to be able to sort fact from fiction impartially and inerrantly. Finally, fiddle the results produced by the “fact check” outfit. A case in point: Politifact. What is Politifact, anyway, and who’s behind it? More to the point, should you trust it? Why do that, if you don’t trust the mainstream media? Politifact is, after all, the handmaiden of the mainstream media. The second way is for politicians. Here it is in six easy steps. One: make clear that the US federal constitution has only negative value, as it makes no provision for material benefits for the people; two, mention, to great applause, the “civilian national security force” that will be as well-funded and as lethal as the military; three: wait for a response (in all probability, nothing consequential will develop, so don’t fret); four: get the new “security force” authorized by Congress (it’s in the Obamacare bill, believe it or not...

Number 288

The New Terrapin Gazette Number 288 14 January, 2013 Lowly, semicomic diarrhea kills 2,866,000 people a year worldwide, 2,474,000 of them children under the age of five. This is ten times the number of people who die from AIDS. But no one is wearing a brown ribbon on his tuxedo lapel at the Academy Awards or marching up the Mall in Washington carrying a sign reading DIARRHEA — IT CAN BE CONTAINED. Firearms Legislation In Context This video is what you need to see — in fact, it’s all you need to see, in order to understand what is going on and what should be going on. It gets NTG’s highest recommendation. Don’t skip it! In the event you want more, you might like to see CNN’s Piers Morgan get clobbered by Ben Shapiro here. How that could happen is the question, and there are two explanations: first, Morgan is a vulgar propagandist masquerading as a journalist; second, the facts do not support his opinions. In fact Morgan literally does not know what he is talking about. If you wish to read some commentary on the Morgan-Shapiro exchange, you can go here and then read this or some terse and trenchant remarks by the erudite Roger Kimball. Please don’t misunderstand: this newsletter respects its readership, and knows that everyone can see that Alex Jones is no Ben Shapiro. Now...

Number 287

The New Terrapin Gazette Number 287 10 January, 2012 To assent to obvious lies is to co-operate with evil, and in some small way to become evil oneself. One’s standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. The Reichstag Is Burning Obama has found his crisis, and his excuse. He appears poised to take the first steps to disarm the populace, using as his excuse a tragedy caused by bad parenting and a psychological condition that, in all probability, was exacerbated by psychoactive medication(s) that provoked suicidal violence. It has always been Obama’s intent to preside over the reconstruction of a republic that would be unable to resist his mandates. He lied repeatedly when he insisted that firearms would not be restricted, confiscated, or nullified as a means for the polity to enforce the federal constitution. Obama will cynically exploit false perceptions of risk. He knows that an improperly governed populace must be disarmed. Using slightly over fifty percent of the voting public to impose unconstitutional infringements on the entire population is simply wicked. You do not need links to the news stories that describe the present descent into tyranny. The media are telling you what is happening, and they are telling you that trying to halt the Obamoid juggernaut is futile. The presidential election was massively fraudulent....
