…teleological behavior directed towards a final state or goal is not something off limits for natural science and an anthropomorphic misconception of processes which, in themselves, are undirected and accidental. Rather it is a form of behavior which can be well defined in scientific terms and for which the necessary conditions and possible mechanisms can be indicated.
Sloganeering In The Attack On Freedom Of The Press
No regime that lusts to control the populace can live peacefully with unfettered journalism, as was demonstrated by Senators Reid and Schumer and Pelosi who — along with many other “progressives” — pushed for the “Fairness Doctrine”. That was, you will recall from Numbers 40, 93 and 185 of this newsletter, a failed attempt to limit the number of “wingnut” radio broadcasts. Now the British are looking quite seriously at even more draconian censorship for their entire press. It’s called a “royal charter”. For information on it, begin with this brief weblog post. You can also proceed to the linked commentary in (of course) The Guardian.
It’s appalling: the British ought to be ashamed of themselves — the people who resisted Hitler with grim determination seem to consider the defense of Liberty too tiresome to be sustained. Cynics might respond that the home of the Webbs and the Labor Party is realizing one of the most rotten of its expedient ideological fantasies. It’s a waking nightmare for decent folks.
Britain is not unique, for the USA has managed to impose de facto controls on its press, but in a different way: over time, political sentiments among journalists have shifted to the distinct advantage of collectivism. Outrageous Obamoid acts, statements, policies and malfeasance are cursorally reported — and disappear from the public consciousness because the press immediately ignores them. The virtual political unanimity of journalists is a genuine danger to the republic.
Parenthetically, this newsletter is interested in the trendy, smug terminology employed by this Limey (and many other bogus boffins). Well, good; this affords an opportunity for NTG to pursue an idiosyncratic enjoyment: the turning over of flat rocks in boggy areas, the objective being to marvel masochistically at the disgusting things that writhe in the cleansing sunshine. The most notable term in the Briton’s heretical sermon is “civil society”. In spite of the fact that everyone knows what “civil” and “society” mean, the thoughtful will ask what in the world those words refer to when they are linked.
Some might understand the neologism to apply to the segment of the populace that is not in the military — but should the word not then be “civilian”? Others might wonder whether the writer intends to refer to polite folks, as opposed to uncivil clods. Not likely. Yet a third possibility has been suggested: that “civil society” is the product of the organizing, enlisting and agitating activities of all non-governmental organizations, as if the broad spectrum of pressure groups were comprised of rigidly allied movements. Well, only a small minority of the population of any nation belongs to this or that NGO, so this smacks of false claims of solidarity (egad — there’s another propagandistic term!).
NTG suggests that there is something smug, if not haughty, about individuals who toss “civil society” around as if it were an aid to scholarly discourse. It’s elitist jargon, isn’t it? It comes easily to snobs and frauds because it sounds almost as if it were an academically justified taxonomic specification.
Honest political commentary can do without “civil society”. The rational person will simply refer to “society”, “the polity”, “the electorate” or perhaps just “the population”.
In sum, the term “civil society” is pretentious lexical rubbish.
This Proves Anthropogenic Global Warming Is Real, Regardless Of The “Observed Data”
Advisory: Bitter Sarcasm Alert!
All variations in weather prove the reality of AGW. It’s colder? Yes, it is, and of course that means Al Gore was right. And if it’s warmer? Jim Hansen called it. Or what if it’s not changing? That is a scientific demonstration of how dangerous AGW is.
Look at this graph, for example, and you can see the horror that awaits if we don’t reduce carbon dioxide emissions now!
What’s that? You say it looks as if the winter weather in Great Britain is more chilly than toasty, at least most of the time? Yes, it does appear that way to those in the grip of what Marx called “false consciousness”, but you have to get past superficial appearances and see things through correct eyes. You are not socially correct yet, and you had better develop a social conscience so you don’t mistake facts for truth! If you persist in individualistic thinking and cling to the anti-social errors it produces, you will only harm yourself and your family and friends and all of society; after all, Al and Jim, who have your interests at heart and are watching you, can be only so patient!
Whatever you do, don’t presume to make your own decisions based on the so-called evidence you find at anti-social websites. That would only confuse you, and you know you are easily confused, don’t you? Of course you do, you naive little pleb, you! Now stop thinking and let your Grate Leaders tell you all about the grim realities of a sinful world without carbon offsets and higher taxes and politicians who don’t have to answer to the electorate; in short, learn about cool people who are so much, much smarter than you are.
A Security Scare
This newsletter recently warned its subscribers regarding a deceitful probe, actually a type of “phishing“, attempted by a Chinese company called Zorpia. Fortunately it appears that the rascals cannot gain access to a Gmail address book as long as the Gmail user does not take the bait (which pretends to be a “private message” from a person known to the recipient). If you are approached in this fashion, do not open the message; delete it and set your e-mail to reject all future communications from Zorpia as spam. There’s more information here. Be careful, Pilgrims — Zorpia is not nice!
…And Now, The Real Thing
Here’s a quote from The Wall Street Journal that should scare the daylights out of you:
If the attacking side secretly musters large amounts of capital without the enemy nations (sic) being aware of this at all and launches a sneak attack against its financial markets, then, after causing a financial crisis, buries a computer virus and hacker (sic) detachment in the opponent’s computer system in advance, while at the same time carrying out a network attack against the enemy so that the civilian electricity network, traffic dispatching network, financial transaction network, telephone communications network, and mass media network are completely paralyzed, this will cause the enemy nation to fall into social panic, street riots, and a political crisis.
Who wrote that? A Chinese general, in 2002.
You may be able to read the entire article here.
The seductive power of Utopia necessarily rests on the misconception that the present and recent past are grossly inadequate, while the future, viewed as a linear continuation of current trends, is dismal. Collectivist/Utopian reformers must, in other words, convince the polity that it has fallen short, even to the point of committing sinful acts. The consequences of those alleged moral mistakes usually take the form of retribution of Biblical proportions. The scientists and politicians employing this terror tactic do indeed remind of Old Testament prophets. The fact that their horrifying visions of the future almost always fail in every detail hardly matters, for the press will ignore those diagnostic outcomes, and tout the tales of terror told by tendentious tartuffes.
A case in point: the following fifteen ridiculous predictions, originally issued by highly educated fools in 1970. The mass media have subsequently ignored this embarrassing rubbish, when in fact the predictions are crucial to an understanding of the social and political climate. This material is an instance of corrupted science and the abuse of authority, for the purpose of these goofy predictions was to produce alarm, even panic. The experts making these statements hoped to exploit the irrational guilt, self-abasement, overweening respect for perceived leaders, and sheer gullibility of the public. Today this list of forecasts reveals what many “noted scientists” thought of you in 1970, when this rubbish was promoted as substantiated wisdom.
Even if you recall the first publication here (they appeared in Nr. 144, which was published in April, 2010) of these predictions, do read the entire list again.
“Civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind.” – George Wald, Harvard Biologist
“We have about five more years at the outside to do something.” – Kenneth Watt, ecologist
“Demographers agree almost unanimously on the following grim timetable: by 1975 widespread famines will begin in India; these will spread by 1990 to include all of India, Pakistan, China and the Near East, Africa. By the year 2000, or conceivably sooner, South and Central America will exist under famine conditions….By the year 2000, thirty years from now, the entire world, with the exception of Western Europe, North America, and Australia, will be in famine.” – Peter Gunter, professor, North Texas State University
“It is already too late to avoid mass starvation.” – Denis Hayes, chief organizer for Earth Day
“We are in an environmental crisis which threatens the survival of this nation, and of the world as a suitable place of human habitation.” – Barry Commoner, Washington University biologist
“Man must stop pollution and conserve his resources, not merely to enhance existence but to save the race from intolerable deterioration and possible extinction.” – New York Times editorial, the day after the first Earth Day
“Population will inevitably and completely outstrip whatever small increases in food supplies we make. The death rate will increase until at least 100-200 million people per year will be starving to death during the next ten years.” – Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University biologist
“By… some experts feel that food shortages will have escalated the present level of world hunger and starvation into famines of unbelievable proportions. Other experts, more optimistic, think the ultimate food-population collision will not occur until the decade of the 1980s.” – -Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University biologist
“Scientists have solid experimental and theoretical evidence to support…the following predictions: In a decade, urban dwellers will have to wear gas masks to survive air pollution…by 1985 air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half….” – Life Magazine, January 1970
“At the present rate of nitrogen buildup, it’s only a matter of time before light will be filtered out of the atmosphere and none of our land will be usable.” – Kenneth Watt, Ecologist
“Air pollution…is certainly going to take hundreds of thousands of lives in the next few years alone.” – Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University biologist
“We are prospecting for the very last of our resources and using up the nonrenewable things many times faster than we are finding new ones.” – Martin Litton, Sierra Club director
“By the year 2000, if present trends continue, we will be using up crude oil at such a rate…that there won’t be any more crude oil. You’ll drive up to the pump and say, `Fill ‘er up, buddy,’ and he’ll say, `I am very sorry, there isn’t any.'” – Kenneth Watt, Ecologist
“Dr. S. Dillon Ripley, secretary of the Smithsonian Institute, believes that in 25 years, somewhere between 75 and 80 percent of all the species of living animals will be extinct.” – Sen. Gaylord Nelson
“The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years. If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age.” – Kenneth Watt, Ecologist

This commentary may shed helpful light on the subject.
When the next wave of alarmist nonsense is preached, whorish journalists will dutifully attempt to arouse the irrational fears of the public by repeating the cycle of bad science, terror-evoking predictions and scathing denunciation of humanity’s greed and evil nature. That will be followed by implicit demands for drastically punitive reform and the meek submission of the ruled to the will of the ruling elite. It’s a ritual that reminds of primitive superstition.
Well, today’s predicted catastrophes are dominated by anthropogenic global warming (“climate change”). This is a permutation of the hysteria evoked by the deformed science of the “green” movement.
Enviro-alarmism does not work well if the target of the propaganda, the public, does not view itself from the first as fundamentally flawed. In order to make their lies forceful, most “green” reformers preach two themes: first, that the victims have sinned, and deserve to suffer for their crimes; the claim is that lethal risk, caused by misbehavior, now threatens. Second, the deceivers claim redemption begins with the acknowledgment of past crimes; “first, hate yourself”. That opens the door to the power grab, for rescue will not be possible without the public’s submission to wise leadership.
If this two-step hustle reminds one of the deceits of a pernicious religion, it should. From the first, this newsletter indicated in its coverage of anthropogenic global warming that the hoax was a matter of faith, not science. Accordingly, do watch this highly relevant video of Michael Crichton replacing mindless nonsense with reason. It’s brief — and compelling.
Everyone wants to be optimistic about tomorrow, but the vision of a better future too often begins with self-hatred. That tragic psychological phenomenon has served tyrants and charlatans well for many centuries; now it’s overdue for disposal. Self-abnegation (call it mortification of the self, or possibly the abasement of one’s humanity) is a corrosive response that allows decent people to defer to predatory rascals like Al Gore, nullifies the dignity of the individual and replaces common sense with gullibility. Those effects make it a powerful enemy of Liberty.
Today the West is plagued by a number of cynical individuals who claim to understand the times so well that they assume a sense of entitlement. These self-promoters style themselves intellectuals, social philosophers and critics, and — above all — as leaders, reformers and holders of power. Many of them have a view of reality that is the curse of Western Civilization: the notion that the assumption of power is possible for those who can promote among the ignorant masses self-hatred and a passion for atonement.
One should ask how self-hatred became a theme in Western Civilization. Some might blame secularization, noting that religious belief tends to produce self-assurance and obedience that do not question the morality of the culture. Others might suggest that as soon as man was viewed as an animal that was not created, but evolved naturally, a confident Western culture began to rot. A narrower view might blame the rise of a degraded philosophy — the replacement of the Greeks’ insightful, articulate wisdom by impenetrable Hegelian babble. Once Marx and Engels had demonstrated the evil of Liberty and predicted revolution/evolution that would destroy the concept of the individual, Western Civilization could be understood as accursed, if not damned.
And the legacy of this perversion? The “progressivism” of the USA’s ruling class is distinguished by a bitter rejection of the concept of Western exceptionalism. As error-prone as earlier generations were — slavery, genocide and monopolistic exploitation are examples of moral failure — the “progressive” ignores the fact that the mistakes were hypocritical. He does not credit the fundamental values and aspirations of past generations for having given the USA every possibility and motive to do better. Over time, US imperialism declined, slavery was ended, women were allowed to vote, and sincere efforts were made to advance humane policies. That was possible because the citizenry increasingly chose to live according to its declared principles.
Even as the adventurous nation was shedding negative ideas and practices, corrosive criticism grew. The myths of Utopian collectivism became entrenched in the academy, and past sins were endlessly denounced. The honest call for reform became a bitter demand for reparations. The excesses of industrial development were not just addressed — the complaints against them became permanent, irrational indictments. Over time, mankind was seen by some of the most bitter ideologues as a parasitical monster whose presence on the sacred planet was scandalously harmful.
So profound is this disgust for humanity that all inclement weather and even earthquakes have been blamed on the people infestation. The cult of anthropogenic global warming is an expression of unreason that can and often does transgress mere greed, ideology and stupidity, ending in superstitious fanaticism. Having savaged science and prostituted governance, Al Gore and Jim Hansen and their gullible adherents are responsible for lunatic intellectual vandalism.
Most alarming of all, Western Civilization is far too reluctant to understand obvious truths about its ancient mortal enemy, Islam. The implications of multiculturalism, as they worm their fell way into the political system, are genuinely suicidal.
That is not hyperbole. The USA has a flawed record of tolerance for immigrants, but overall, the notion that aliens can be welcomed has a long history. A number of Hessian mercenaries who fought against Washington’s army settled in the young nation. The USA has a discernible willingness to accept newcomers — even though at times and for certain groups, the door was slammed shut. The prevailing ethos has always been a tacit requirement that the new citizens acculturate: “You are one of us now, so act like it”.
That principle cannot possibly be applied to Muslims. For the first time in US history, the new arrivals are determined not to adapt and adopt the values of their residence, but to wage war on it. That war is described in precise detail in the Koran. The inevitable conclusion: admission of Muslims (who, by definition, believe in the divine origin and inerrancy of the Koran, and will so state) is suicidal for the West. The issue is not defined solely by bombings and assassinations (“terror”, which is the wrong word), but also by the demographic realities and their consequences for a representative democracy.
If the USA genuinely appreciated its Liberty, it would act rationally. The fundamental assumption of multiculturalism, that all cultures are ethically equal and must be fully respected, is utterly incompatible with US traditions of justice and tolerance.
It is a bitter truth that must be understood and accepted: the decent urge to treat all human beings with compassion and equity is exploited by Islam. Since the Koran’s commandments to wage eternal war on the West come from heaven, no true Muslim can be admitted by the USA as a peaceful citizen who cherishes Western values. Further, the task of separating the sheep from the goats is impossible — recall the divine permission to lie that is called taqiyya.
The fundamental concept of multiculturalism was not supposed to be an intellectual snob’s death wish. In practice, it simply cannot apply across the board. The admission of all ethnic groups on the same basis is a clear indication of the West’s rejection of its manifest exceptional status. Western Civilization is not at all equal to other civilizations, and those Westerners whose tolerance knows no limits are fools. At some point, the enemy must be recognized. After all, he has repeatedly, clearly and emphatically defined his status by bitterly denouncing the West as worthy only of destruction.
And the remedy for the madness? It is not available. That is the case because the insanity is not fully recognized. Yes, there are occasional Cassandras. Their efforts are smothered by the pervasive, trendy, mindless yet occult self-hatred that poisons the assumptions of the Bicoastal Elite.
Until it is no longer considered fashionably sophisticated to be a smug, bored and cynical critic of Western Civilization, the ruling elite will remain myopic and addled.
A Cascade Of Errors
It’s an absurd undertaking, but the federal supreme court has agreed to struggle with an issue — same-sex marriage — that should not exist. The fundamentals are few:
1. No government has a proper role to play in marriage. The notion that individuals must or can be licensed by a government to commit emotionally and legally to each other is stupidity squared.
2. Matters of responsibility, inheritance and ownership can and should be settled by legally binding contracts, if the partners in marriage wish. There is neither need nor rationale for a legal status of “married”. The system as it currently exists is a monstrosity, as anyone who has ever been through a divorce can testify.
3. Sexual morality is a matter of personal choice, and the government should be involved only in the investigation of possible crimes such as coercion, the initiation of violence, and abuse of minors.
It’s none of your business if two or three or more homosexuals wish to call themselves “married” to each other. It certainly should be none of the government’s business, either. Your efforts to impose your sexual choices on others are inappropriate, with the exceptions noted above (well, there must also be an age of consent, and eighteen years is probably the best compromise).
The court has falsely assumed it can do the right thing. It could hardly refuse to make that mistake, since the fifty states have all arrogated to themselves powers that are at base irrational, unnecessary, and productive of unwarranted costs and complications. The system is, to put it precisely, insane.
Only fundamental reform could sweep away the nonsense, and there is no prospect of that. It is very likely that whatever the court decides, it will alienate and embitter participants in a dispute that need never have emerged.
Witness an expression of the instinctive genius of a citizen who understands the requirements of his role in the electorate. Highest recommendation.
Germany dominates Europe — and as you will recall, Number 84 of this newsletter, then called The Penguin Post, noted speculation that the Nazi Schutzstaffel planned it that way before WW II ended. That does make a certain amount of sense. Here’s the old link, which still works.
“…Obamacare is doing little to address rising medical costs, and is likely making the problem worse” (source). What did you expect? Did you believe that turning one-sixth of the US economy over to the federal bureaucracy would reduce the cost of medicine/surgery, attract more people to careers in health care, and improve the quality and length of your life?
This will really bother some folks….
Piers Morgan and many other professional Brits are fond of saying that the Thirteen Colonies are provisioned with a plethora of murderers who use firearms to kill the innocent, while the civilized Britons are not allowed firearms and therefore send each other to heaven or hell at a much slower pace. A hat tip to reader JY for shedding some light on the fairy tale. The facts cannot be argued. So there.
If you are looking for a good place to live in the USA, you might want to consider this information.
Commentary strikes again: “…the New York Times has been working hard to paint those bent on using violence against Israel in the most attractive light as possible.” Read the full complaint here.
A Canadian TV documentary on immigration causes a fuss. Highly recommended.
A musical interlude — with relevant content.
Obama the anticolonialist. Do you recall that the White House’s bust of Churchill was handed back to the Brits? That rude act was a deliberate signal of contempt and future opposition. He’s one classy president, eh?
Here are some clever hacks that just might work. The memory tip — review what you want to remember just before you go to sleep — is effective, so maybe the others are, as well.
A collectivist organ tries to discredit the National Rifle Association of America by exposing its leaders. This effort ignores the fact that the NRA’s policies and structure are the result of a democratic reorganization often called “Cincinnati”. That refers to the 1977 national meeting at which the leadership was replaced by true believers in the second amendment, and the NRA committed to vigorous advocacy. If the membership wanted to alter that policy, it could and would. Virtually all NRA members are satisfied that their association is properly run.
Chrysler — the name gives you gooseflesh, because this is the quintessential All-American Can-Do outfit. Too big to fail…unh, thanks to your money, which the government confiscated.
NSA speaks. Woo, woo!
Obamoid propaganda explained. Nothing new, but some folks will not have heard of these tactics.
You might have seen this; it’s very popular because it’s so hard to believe.
Will the GOP ever get the message? Probably not…. Highest recommendation. — All right, full disclosure: NTG loves Sowell. He’s brilliant. If he wrote it, you should read it. If he says it, you should listen. His ability to decode and destroy trendy ideological claptrap makes him an excellent guide for the perplexed — provided they can recognize genius when they encounter it.
Those with an interest in higher education will want to read the commentary at the link. A weblogger says, “…you can only call people the enemy for so long based on their race and gender before they start to notice”. Then there is this: “…after decades of the government and corporate legal counsels actively stamping out sexual harassment a new paradigm exists. If a woman complains about a sexist man then the man is presumed guilty until he can prove his innocence”. It’s a hot issue that needs to be quenched with cold rationality.
Quote: “From 2001 to 2005, about 700 rockets were fired from Gaza into Israel. Since the 2005 withdrawal, over 3,400 more rockets were fired into Israel. The rate of firings increased after Hamas took control of Gaza in June, 2007.” Read the rest. It will help you understand a conflict that is awash in lies, outrageous propaganda, and malice. (Note: that’s not due to the dishonesty of both sides.)
I have always heard that virtue oughta be its own reward
But it never comes so easy when you’re living by the sword
It’s even harder to be heartless when you look at me that way
You’re as mighty as the flower that will grow the stones away
